Jackie Johnson – Regina, Saskatchewan
The following is a transcript from the television series Agribiz, which aired on July 17, 2003.
Jackie Johnson: We train whichever horse is suitable for our trick training program. It doesn’t matter what breed, age, size, make or model. We have Donkeys, Quarter Horses, Ponies….you name it, we can train it. What got us into ‘trick’ training is we were looking for a better relationship with our horses. We’ve all seen people who ride their horses bareback and bridles…we wanted to take the ‘mystery’ out of that and help people get the same relationship with their horses that we have with ours. Brenda and I generally spend about 30 hours a week training our horses. It takes a lot of hours to get a horse to show quality where we can take them on the road and have a good performance for an audience.
We get a lot of folks who think that our training is both interesting and magical, and we’d like to dispel the magic – not that we are trying to ruin it for anybody! We just want to make people understand that anybody can achieve what we are doing. The other side of the coin is people who don’t see the validity of our style of training. This is a hurdle and a challenge. We’d like people to know that what we are doing is valuable, regardless of the disciple that they are in.
